Vikram, Director, Strategic Market Development, Livestock, Japan, doesn't shy away from change - or a challenge. From the beginning of his career in 1999 as the financial controller for Fort Dodge in Chennai, India, he played an active role in the organization's acquisition of Solvay Belgium, and a concurrent merger with American Cyanamid. He grew his career at the company before it became Zoetis, relocating several times including to Bombay, the Philippines, and Australia.
As he settled into his new role in Australia, Zoetis (then Pfizer Animal Health) announced the acquisition of Wyeth, leading Vikram to move from Sydney to Shanghai in February 2010 as the Associate Finance Director for the Asia Pacific business. "I was blessed to work with really smart people who welcomed me very warmly into their operations," he said.
As Zoetis evolved, so did Vikram. In October 2012 he moved to Tokyo to start a new role on the Commercial team as Livestock Marketing Director.
"The new role was totally out of my comfort zone, but it has been a delight to learn the commercial side of the business," he said. "Working alongside our customer-obsessed sales, marketing and technical teams to meet customers and convince them to buy our products is very satisfying, and has been a key motivator."
Vikram said that he has had to adapt his management style since becoming a Commercial leader.
"There is a big difference between how I managed my team in finance, and how I lead in the commercial group. My management style now is more focused on collaboration, relationships, and enthusiasm. I have learned aspects of various styles from the wonderful leaders produced by Zoetis within Japan and outside – and I continue to evolve."
Adapting to life in Japan has also been rewarding. "I really enjoy the richness of Japanese culture and the people's kindness," he added. "It was a big challenge to learn Japanese, but it has been a great opportunity for development."
Identifying Growth Opportunities in the Japanese Livestock Market
Like many industries in Japan, the livestock market has faced its share of challenges for many years, and Vikram has been instrumental in identifying growth opportunities in this unique market. He exemplifies our Core Belief of Run It Like You Own It to deliver results that matter. He and his team have been focused on successfully growing in-line products and are driving toward greater growth.
"Our goal is to become the leader in the Japanese animal health market. I strongly believe we will be there soon," concluded Vikram.
