Colleague Spotlight Dawn

Dawn, Global API Lead, Global Strategic Sourcing, knows how to secure our business' most vital building blocks: active pharmaceutical ingredients (API). APIs are the substances that are biologically active within pharmaceutical products – the most fundamental elements of medicines that treat disease. While Zoetis makes a few of its own APIs, we also source from around 100 suppliers.

Dawn, Global API Lead, Global Strategic Sourcing, knows how to secure our business’ most vital building blocks: active pharmaceutical ingredients (API). APIs are the substances that are biologically active within pharmaceutical products – the most fundamental elements of medicines that treat disease. While Zoetis makes a few of its own APIs, we also source from around 100 suppliers.

Dawn has developed her own formula for API procurement – one honed over 25 years in the pharmaceutical industry, and which delivers the best team chemistry for success: Control + Clarity = Commitment.

“Control means working together as a team to secure timelines, actions and activities. Clarity is fostering a culture of transparency and openness so that my team has a clear view of our goals and what is needed for success. These two elements together beget commitment from colleagues to get the job done,” explained Dawn. It’s no surprise she has made a meaningful impact with this philosophy at Zoetis; it chimes perfectly with our culture of Core Beliefs.

When asked about the Core Belief that resonates with her most, Dawn didn’t hesitate: “Our Colleagues Make the Difference, because we are all individuals committed to Run It Like We Own It. And working together in a collaborative spirit, we all become One Zoetis.”

After beginning her career at another pharmaceutical company, Dawn eventually applied her skills in procurement in 2000. “Since then, it’s been history. I’ve absolutely loved it,” she said. “It was a huge learning curve, but I enjoyed dealing with supply chains, different stakeholders. I got exposure to every side of the business.” After four years working on day-to-day operations, she moved into strategic procurement in 2004.

Understanding the procurement landscape includes evaluating potential risks and understanding the breadth of current and future regulatory changes. Managing costs, negotiating contracts with partners from around the world, and ensuring that our API supply is robust are also key constituents of Dawn’s work.

“It’s the high-level strategic piece that gives me a buzz,” said Dawn.“Thinking about where we are in three years? Five years? There are a number of challenges that we need to consider. We work closely with our colleagues in VMRD to understand the needs of products coming down the pipeline. Further down the line, we work with Commercial and Supply Chain colleagues to see what the projections are longer term. It’s a real One Zoetis approach.”

In addition to effectively collaborating with colleagues, Dawn has also implemented a new system to ensure successful collaboration with external stakeholders. Her Supplier Relationship Management Program strategically manages Zoetis’ relationship with key API suppliers to maximize the value of those relationships and interactions. By developing key performance indicators that are evaluated each year, she and her team drive continuous improvement. “The new system is changing the way we have performance discussions with suppliers. It provides greater visibility and we can understand what’s working well and where there is room for development,” she said.

Dawn is based at our International Operations headquarters in Dublin, Ireland. As a U.K. transplant to the Emerald Isle, on the weekends she enjoys exploring the countryside with her husband, Robin; daughter, Chloe; and two dogs, Tali and Lily.
